Why is hiking uphill harder?

man and woman crossing bridge

When you are hiking uphill, your muscles have to work harder to move the same amount of weight. This is because when you are hiking uphill, your body is working against gravity. Gravity wants the object (in this case, your body) to move down hill. When you hike uphill, your muscles have to work harder in order to counteract this force and keep moving forward.
